The History of HarperCollins
The brothers James and John Harper started with a printing business in New York in the early 19th century and branched out into publishing soon after. Harper & Brothers were known early on for popular publications like the family newspaper Harper’s Weekly Magazine (1857), Harper’s Bazar (1867) and authors like Edgar Allen Poe, the Brontë sisters, Herman Melville, Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.
Like the Harper brothers, William Collins started with a printing business in the earlty 19th century but on the other side of the Atlantic in Glasgow. He overcame initial obstacles by specializing in printing bibles from 1841 onwards. In 1848, Collins’ son ventured into publishing and focused on religious and educational texts. The company expanded its range and started publishing fiction in 1917. It was well known for its bibles, atlases, dictionaries and reissued classics. Its probably most widely used publication is Collins English Dictionary.
Mergers and Acquisitions that Created HarperCollins
The origins of HarperCollins started almost 200 years ago with two printing businesses on either side of the Atlantic. Here are some of the milestones from printers and specialized publishers to international publishing group:
1817: Brothers James and John Harper start the printing business J. and J. Harper in New York.
1819: The printing company Collins is founded in Glasgow, Scotland.
1833: J. and J. Harper is renamed Harper & Brothers and starts publishing books.
1868: Collins is renamed William Collins Sons and Co Ltd.
1962: Harper & Row is formed by merging Harper & Brothers with Row, Peterson and Company.
1987: News Corporation acquires Harper & Row.
1989: News Corporation acquires William Collins & Sons.
1990: HarperCollins Book Group is founded.
Interesting about the history of HarperCollins is the similarity of the two established companies Harper & Row and William Collins & Sons on both sides of the Atlantic. Both started out as printing ventures in the early 19th century, switched to publishing a few decades later and soon expanded their narrow lists to encompass a wide range of publishing products.
